Clam Harbour-area fire destroys house, 2 garages

A fire has destroyed a home and two garages in the Clam Harbour area of Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore.

About a dozen fire trucks, as well as police and an ambulance, headed to the scene shortly before 10 a.m. on Monday.

"When the crews arrived, two garages and a house were fully involved and immediately they made an attack on the fire," said John Lowe, division commander for Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency.

Investigators were able to get into the building at around 3:45 p.m.

Lowe said those investigators are trying to determine whether anyone was home at the time the fire started. He said once the hot spots are fully extinguished, fire investigators can try to figure out the cause.

"They'll start cleaning out and sifting through everything that's in the building," said Lowe, adding the two garages have been destroyed.

"The house has one wall left standing and some of the roof."

RCMP are also investigating.

The Department of Natural Resources was also on scene, worried the fire could spread to nearby woods as conditions across the province are very dry.

However, Lowe said that was just a precaution and the woods did not catch fire.
