Cleanup day: 30+ cm of snow dumped on parts of Newfoundland's east coast

Saturday's fierce snowstorm brought life on the east coast of the island pretty much to a standstill — and Sunday will see a large cleanup as life returns to normal.

Strong winds and heavy snow caused treacherous driving on roads, numerous cancellations, closures and power outages.

Flights were also cancelled.

Parts of the Northeast Avalon had blizzard conditions late Saturday afternoon and through the early evening, with near zero visibility reported.

Both the RCMP and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary asked motorists to stay off roads, so snowplow operators could try to keep thoroughfares passable.

There were numerous traffic accidents reported.

According to Environment Canada Meteorologist Rodney Barney on Sunday, 29 centimetres of snow fell at St. John's International Airport.

Unofficially, Dunville received 33 centimetres, while Mount Pearl, Mount Carmel and St. John's east received 32 centimetres of the white stuff.
