Clifton Vassel charged with 1st-degree murder of Andrew Surage

A 28-year-old man who was already in jail in connection with a shooting that left six people injured has been charged with first-degree murder.

Clifton Vassel, who was previously charged with 36 offences after a shooting in northwest Toronto in April, was charged Monday with the shooting death of Andrew Surage.

Surage, a 47-year-old father of five, was shot in the chest after a botched robbery outside an unlicensed after-hours club in the Weston Road and Rogers Road area in the fall of 2014.

Police say Surage was shot after he came to the aid of a friend who was being robbed, which occurred in the parking lot of a plaza where the club operated.

Vassel was arrested in Toronto South Detention Centre. He was previously arrested under the name Clifton Vassel Youria.

He made a brief court appearance on Tuesday morning and was remanded into custody. He's set to appear before a judge again on July 29.
