George and Amal Clooney have donated $100,000 to some of the Lebanon-based charities which are helping the people of Beirut, following a deadly explosion which took place in the capital on Tuesday. The couple released a joint statement regarding the tragic event, which took place in Amal's home town.

"We’re both deeply concerned for the people of Beirut and the devastation they’ve faced in the last few days," they said in a released statement. "Three charitable organisations we've found are providing essential relief on the ground: the Lebanese Red Cross, Impact Lebanon, and Baytna Baytak."

The couple then asked anybody else able to donate to "help in any way they can".

Amal was born in Beirut but her family moved to the UK when she was just two years old, where she has stayed for much of her life.

Tuesday's blast has left at least 135 people dead and thousands more injured. The catastrophe comes at an already strenuous time as the nation is suffering from an economic crisis made worse by the Covid-19 pandemic.
