8 more COVID deaths, record 2,909 new cases in Singapore

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Friday (1 October) confirmed a record 2,909 COVID-19 cases in Singapore – taking the country's total case count to 99,430 – and eight more deaths due to the disease.

Friday marks the fourth day in a row where there were over 2,000 daily new cases reported in Singapore, with the number expected to rise to 3,200 this weekend.

It is also the 12th day in a row where fatalities from the virus are reported. Singapore's 96th through 103rd COVID-19 fatalities are all Singaporeans: seven men and one woman aged between 66 and 96.

Six of them died on Thursday, bringing Singapore's COVID-19 death toll in September to 46.

Among the fatalities reported on Friday, four had been unvaccinated against COVID-19, two had been partially vaccinated and two had been fully vaccinated. All of them had various underlying medical conditions.

Of the new cases, 2,897 are local infections: 2,079 are in the community, while 818 are dormitory residents. Among the local cases are 556 people above the age of 60, said the MOH.

The remaining 12 cases are imported, of whom seven were detected upon their arrival in Singapore, while five developed the illness during their stay-home notice or isolation period.

Ten active COVID-19 clusters in Singapore, including eight dormitories, are being closely monitored, said the MOH. All eight dormitory clusters have been classified as intra-dormitory transmissions among residents, with no evidence of spread beyond the premises.

Of the list of monitored clusters, the highest number of 61 new cases was added to the cluster at 9 Defu South Street 1 dorm. The cluster now has 212 cases.

Twenty-eight new cases – all quarantined – were added to the cluster at the Avery Lodge dorm, now totalling 397 infections. Twenty-one new cases – all quarantined – were also added to the cluster at the Blue Stars dorm, now totalling 442 infections.

222 require oxygen supplementation; 34 in ICU

As of Friday, 1,356 cases are currently warded in hospital, most of whom are well and under observation.

There are currently 222 cases of serious illness requiring oxygen supplementation and 34 in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Of those who have fallen very ill, 214 are patients above the age of 60, said the MOH.

Apart from the 103 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.

Over the last 28 days, the percentage of local cases who were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms is 98.2 per cent. Over the same period, 471 cases required oxygen supplementation, 52 had been in the ICU, and 45 died.

As of Thursday, about 9.2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered under the national vaccination programme. Some 4.59 million have received at least one dose of the vaccine, with some 4.49 million having completed the full vaccination regimen.

To date, about 500,000 eligible seniors have been invited to receive their booster doses – 236,849 of them have received their booster shots while another 111,000 have booked their appointments.

Separately, 198,533 doses of other vaccines recognised in the World Health Organization’s Emergency Use Listing (WHO EUL) have been administered as of Thursday, covering 101,290 individuals.

This means that 82 per cent of the population have completed their full regimen, or received two doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 85 per cent have received at least one dose.
