Rescue efforts called off for missing person in water near Richibucto
A search off Richibucto for a missing person has stood down, according to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, following the sinking of a small boat on Wednesday.
The search was called off at dusk and handed over to the RCMP.
Earlier in the day, a woman was rescued after being found in the water clinging to a lifeline.
The woman was taken to hospital for what RCMP said were not life-threatening injuries.
The missing person is a 42-year-old man from St-Louis-de-Kent.
Two helicopters deployed from the Halifax Rescue Co-ordination Centre, two Coast Guard ships and two auxiliary vessels, along with RCMP and Parks Canada personnel were part of the search.
The boat had left Kouchibouguac National Park around 4 a.m. Wednesday with two people on board.
The sinking was reported around 7 a.m. on Wednesday.
In a statement from the Rescue Coordination Centre, Captain Liam Mather said: "Our thoughts and hearts are with the family and friends at this difficult time."
