Colbert slams Trump over 'unspeakably monstrous' claims that 'blue states' are to blame for high coronavirus numbers

On Thursday’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the host slammed President Trump for recently claiming that Democratic-led “blue states” were to blame for the high number of reported U.S. deaths related to COVID-19.

During a press conference, Trump said “The blue states had tremendous death rates. If you take the blue states out, we are at a level that I don't think anyone in the world would be at.”

Angered by the divisive comments, Colbert said, “This is unspeakably monstrous, especially for the president of the United States. Whoever they are, these are human lives that he is responsible for.”

Colbert pointed out that Trump’s statement was inaccurate, as Republican led “red states” are currently struggling more than “blue states” with controlling the pandemic. He also pointed out that it doesn’t matter what color a state is, as they all fall under Trump’s jurisdiction.

“The highest infection rates right now are all the states that Trump won, but it doesn't matter,” said Colbert. “We're all Americans. We're all human beings. Donald Trump is the only one who doesn't care that Americans are dying.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
