Cold weather alert issued until Friday by Health Unit

A cold weather alert has been issued by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit Wednesday. It's in effect until the end of the work week with temperatures expected fall to - 15 C or colder.

Acting Associate Medical Officer Dr. Wajid Ahmed said health problems associated with exposure to extreme cold are hypothermia and frostbite.

People who are homeless and those whose homes are poorly insulated or without heat at in "immediate danger," he said in the release.

Warning signs of hypothermia in adults include:

- Shivering

- Exhaustion

- Confusion

- Memory loss

- Slurred speech

- Drowsiness

Warning signs of frostbite include:

- White or greyish-yellow areas on the skin

- Numbness

- Skin that feels unusually firm or waxy

The unit suggests people should have a survival kit that contains several days’ worth of crucial supplies, such as food, water and an alternative source of heat in their homes. Cars should also have a survival kit.

When outside in extreme cold conditions the health unit said people should stay warm and dry by covering exposed skin, with a hat, scarf or mask.

People with heart disease or high blood pressure are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor acclivities in freezing temperatures.
