Collège de Rosemont suspends six teachers after May Day protest

Six teachers from Collège de Rosemont have been suspended for blocking doors to the CEGEP during a May 1 International Workers' Day demonstration.

The administration says the teachers will be on leave with pay while an investigation continues and that further disciplinary action could be taken.

College director Stéphane Godbout says the teachers had been ordered not to take part in the blockade.

"We were very surprised to find that some teachers... had taken it upon themselves to block the college," Godbout said.

"Faced with these events, we made the decision to investigate. "

Godbout said the timeline of courses taught by the suspended teachers wouldn't be affected, though he acknowledged it would require finding replacements to finish the year.

The teachers' union, the Fédération nationale des enseignants et des enseignantes du Québec, called the suspension unnecessarily harsh.
