A collision has sent two people to hospital and closed part of a highway in southern Alberta.

Shortly before 4 p.m., a southbound one-tonne truck and a westbound SUV collided at the intersection of Highway 3 and Highway 510, Alberta RCMP said in a release Friday evening.

By 7:30 p.m., the intersection remained closed. Traffic was being rerouted through the nearby village of Cowley, about 14 kilometres northwest of Pincher Creek.

Of the six occupants in the SUV, one passenger was seriously injured. The 48-year-old woman was taken to hospital, along with the injured driver of the truck.

Officials had no estimate of when the road would be open again.
