Construction begins on expressway pedestrian overpasses

Two pedestrian overpasses, which have been in place since E.C. Row Expressway was completed, are getting some repairs this summer.

Wade Bondy, contracts coordinator with Public Works, said his guess was the overpasses were first completed in the late 1970s.

"Overall, the structure's not in that bad of condition," said Bondy. "A lot of small concrete will be replaced. A lot of aesthetic work and concrete repairs."

Bondy said instead of seeing chipping, you'll see smooth concrete once the repairs are complete.

"It will be nice and smooth and look a lot better," said Bondy.

The work begins Tuesday and is expected to take at least a few months. The contract is for about $1.1 million. The same contractor will complete both projects, which means some work will be done simultaneously.

According to Bondy, the best alternative for pedestrians and cyclists is to use Dominion Boulevard while construction on the pedestrians bridges is underway.
