MORA, N.M. (AP) — Nearly 3,000 firefighters in New Mexico kept the nation's largest active wildfire from growing on Monday as they took advantage of cooler weather before the return of more dangerous conditions later in the week. “Overall, a good day,” fire operations chief Alex McBath said Monday night. “Everything stayed within the fire lines.” Firefighters also expanded contingency firebreaks northeast of Santa Fe as forecasters warned that hotter, windier weather will return by Friday. “Just
For Japan, U.S. President Joe Biden's comment he would be willing to use force to defend Taiwan signalled no formal change in policy. Biden's remark on Monday - during his first Asia visit since taking office - appeared to stretch the limits of the U.S. policy of "strategic ambiguity" toward self-ruled Taiwan, to China's anger. While the United States has a commitment under its Taiwan Relations Act "to help provide Taiwan the means to defend itself", it has long declined to make clear how it might react in the event of a Chinese attack on the island.

BANGKOK (AP) — Residents of the Thai capital Bangkok, in their first opportunity in nine years to vote for their city’s governor, have elected an independent politician seen as representing opponents of the country’s military-backed government, results released Monday showed. Richard Pebody, who leads the high-threat pathogen team at WHO Europe, also told Reuters in an interview that immediate supplies of vaccines and antivirals are relatively limited. His comments came as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it was in the process of releasing some Jynneos vaccine doses for use in monkeypox cases.

TOKYO (Reuters) -Space is a key area of cooperation for Japan with the United States, its closest ally, amid heightened tensions with an increasingly assertive China, which itself aims to become a space power. Tokyo has said it hopes to put one of its astronauts on the lunar surface - the first non-American - in the latter half of the 2020s as part of NASA's Artemis programme to return humans to the moon. Japan has an extensive space programme, mainly focused on developing launchers and space probes.
Non-profit organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador say the high price of gas is affecting food security in the province, but some believe expanded and better integrated public transit could be a way to help. The chairperson of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which runs the Carbonear Food Bank, said she's concerned people in their 350 kilometre area aren't able to get the food they need. "They can't afford to put gas in their vehicle to come," Kerri Abbott said. "By the time they pay their
