Controversial Peel police chief gets 2 more years on the job

Peel Regional Police Chief Jennifer Evans will get two more years on the job.

The Peel Regional Police Services Board approved a two year contract extension that had been previously requested by Evans.

Her five year contract was set to expire in October.

The board made the decision after a vote at a closed-door meeting on Tuesday.

"This was a decision of the Board, and we look forward to working with Chief Evans for the next 2 years as we continue to modernize policing in Peel," board chair Amrik Singh Ahluwalia said in a statement.

Evans has faced opposition in recent years, including calls to resign over her handling of the controversial issue of police carding.

Evans is also named, along with the police services board, in a $21-million lawsuit alleging that she interfered in the investigation into a fatal shooting involving several of her officers in 2015. The chief denies any wrongdoing and has filed a statement of defence saying so.

In a press release, Evans said her focus during the next two years will be implementing the objectives set out in Peel Regional Police's 2017-19 strategic plan, including "achieving community safety together, a professional, diverse and supportive workplace [and] providing quality service."

"I am excited for the opportunity to continue to lead this great organization," she said.
