Corner Brook man well known for fleeing the scene gives RNC another chase

A 34-year-old Corner Brook man known for giving police a little exercise before being arrested has been nabbed by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary after a chase yet again.

On Monday, the RNC issued a warrant for Robert Ross Gould's arrest in relation to theft charges and posted his picture on social media. The man has a lengthy criminal record and is known to police.

Sgt. Kent Kelly said people quickly noticed the media posts and called to let the police know of Gould's whereabouts, but he didn't prove easy to arrest when an officer spotted him near Elizabeth Street. When a patrol officer spotted Gould, he tried to run away Monday evening.

"There was a brief chase, a foot chase with a single officer on patrol," Kelly told CBC News.

Despite his efforts to evade the officer, Gould was successfully arrested and spent the night in jail, in an echo of an incident three years before.

In May 2013, Gould managed to get away from two officers while in police custody at Western Memorial Regional Hospital, awaiting an x-ray on his elbow. He sent police on a wild goose chase as he ran through backyards and the thick woods in Massey Drive before being eventually arrested for the incident.

Police believe he was easily arrested Monday because the public now recognizes Gould and his antics.

"Corner Brook is a fairly small geographic location. At the end of the day, people know who you are, and they know the business you conduct. It was clear to us that because of the information and cooperation we received from the public that led us to the safe detention of Mr. Gould, " said Kelly.

Gould awaits a bail hearing at a later date for his most recent theft charges.
