Coronavirus cases in UK soar by 4,000 as death toll rises by 13

The number of coronavirus cases in the UK has soared by more than 4,000 in the past 24 hours, the Government has said.

New figures show that, as of 9am on Monday, there had been a further 4,044 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, taking the overall number of cases confirmed to 439,013.

The Government also said a further 13 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Monday. This brings the UK total to 42,001.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 57,600 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

It comes after the coronavirus hospital death toll in the UK rose by 10. All 10 deaths have been reported in England in the last 24 hours.

It brings the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 29,918, NHS England said on Monday.

Patients were aged between 60 and 97 and all had known underlying health conditions.

The deaths were between September 24 and September 27.

There were no deaths reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.

A total of 222 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Scotland in the past 24 hours, Nicola Sturgeon said.

Speaking at the Scottish Government’s coronavirus briefing, the First Minister said 27,798 people have now tested positive in Scotland, up from 27,576 on Sunday.

Ms Sturgeon warned the rise in cases is lower than expected and is likely down to a "weekend effect".

No new deaths of patients who first tested positive for the virus in the previous 28 days have been recorded, with this total remaining at 2,511.

There are 122 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, up by 17 in 24 hours.

Of these patients, 16 were in intensive care, up by four.

In Wales, there have been a further 286 cases of Covid, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 23,231.

Public Health Wales said no further deaths had been reported, with the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic remaining at 1,612.

In Northern Ireland, there have been 220 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24-hour reporting period, the Department of Health has said.

It brings the total number of infections to 10,949.

There were no further deaths recorded by the department, leaving the toll at 578.
