Coroner ID’s man who went under water at Millerton Lake and later died at hospital

A man who was rescued at Millerton Lake but later died at the hospital Sunday was identified by the Madera County Coroner’s Office.

He was 21-year-old Carlos Diaz Ortega.

Ortega was with a group of friends on the Madera side of the lake when he went underwater at 5 p.m.

Park rangers said he was over 1,000 yards off the shore when he went under. Lifeguards responded to the scene and recovered Ortega.

He was taken to Valley Children’s Healthcare where he died.

Rangers said it was the second drowning in 2024.

Steve Marquez, 61, of Fresno was pulled from the lake about 20 miles north of Fresno on June 18 around 5:40 p.m.

He was pronounced dead.

Marquez was pulled from a section of unguarded shoreline and hadn’t been wearing a life jacket.
