COVID-19 outbreak declared at Chatham hospital

A new COVID-19 outbreak has been declared.

The latest outbreak has been declared in the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance’s complex continuing care unit on the fourth floor.

As Ontario continues to battle the seventh wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chatham-Kent’s hospital reports its first virus outbreak since early May.

The outbreak was declared after CK Public Health identified six cases of healthcare-acquired COVID-19.

“CK Public Health will work closely with (the health alliance) to manage the outbreak within the complex continuing care unit and will continue to work in consultation until the outbreak is declared over,” hospital officials added in a release.

According to hospital officials, as part of the pandemic response action plan and in alignment with the hospital’s infection prevention and control guidelines, several additional initiatives have been implemented in response to the outbreak.

The Health Alliance will continue following these measures until public health rescinds the outbreak order.

The last COVID-19 outbreak at CKHA was in effect from May 11 to June 2 and was linked to 12 cases of the virus.

Officials highlighted the hospital remains a safe place to receive care. Anyone experiencing an emergent acute care need is asked to call 911 still or visit the nearest emergency department.

“Since the onset of this pandemic, the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance has taken decisive and immediate action with the ever-evolving dynamics of COVID-19,” officials said. “The safety of staff, physicians, patients, care partners, visitors, and the community at large has and will remain the top priority.”

As it stands, there are two COVID-19 outbreaks currently in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. The other outbreak is at Copper Terrace Long Term Care Facility in Chatham, and it has a total of seven cases. That outbreak was declared on July 13.

Chatham-Kent Public Health reported 43 new cases of COVID-19 this past week.
