COVID-19 Vaccine Scam In Alberta

·1 min read

Alberta Health Services sent out a message on the Twitter social media platform on the evening of Feb. 3, 2021, warning of a telephone scam targeting elderly Albertans. Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, reiterated this warning at the start of the provincial COVID-19 update on Feb. 4. AHS warns that they have been receiving reports that Albertans over 75 are being contacted by telephone and told that they could book their COVID-19 vaccination for a fee. To clarify, AHS does not ask for payment for COVID-19 vaccinations and certainly would not do so over the telephone. If you receive one of these phone calls, AHS recommends that you hang up immediately and report the call to the non-emergency line for your local law enforcement.

While it is encouraging that two COVID-19 vaccines are now available in Alberta, the province’s vaccination efforts have been hampered by supply and logistical issues that have significantly slowed down the process, which may be adding to the concerns and anxieties of some individuals. It is contemptible that a person or group of people would be willing to take advantage of anyone’s concerns or worries about the current pandemic, but it is especially heinous to do this to the people who are in the highest risk category for serious illness or death due to COVID-19.
