14-year-old driver charged in crash that killed girl, 13, in Caledon, Ont.

A 14-year-old driver has been charged in the death of the 13-year-old girl he was carrying as a passenger in Caledon, Ont., after a crash early Tuesday morning.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was taken to hospital and subsequently charged with criminal negligence causing death, dangerous driving causing death and possession of stolen property worth more than $5,000.

The crash happened just after 4 a.m. ET on Hurontario Street, also known as Highway 10, north of Highpoint Side Road. Caledon is about 60 kilometres northwest of downtown Toronto.

The car had been travelling northbound when it suddenly veered left, struck a hydro pole and smashed through a fence. The vehicle, a Toyota SUV, then rammed into a brick pillar that marks the entrance to Teen Ranch Canada.

The ranch is described on its website as "a not-for-profit, inter-denominational Christian Sports Camp and Retreat Facility."

Staff at Teen Ranch told CBC News the teens involved in the crash are not from their camp. Day camps are cancelled for the day due to the road closure and police investigation.

Police are investigating whether the car was stolen, although the possession of stolen property charge indicates that they believe theft was involved and the teen is too young to drive legally.

Police are still trying to notify the girl's family of her death, Ontario Provincial Police Const. Stephanie Hammond said Tuesday morning.

"Obviously, it's a concern that crashes like this do occur and it's such a tragedy when it does," she told CBC News.

The roadway was reopened to traffic just before noon ET.
