1 dead, 3 injured after car goes off bridge

One person is dead and three are in hospital after a car went off a bridge and into the ravine near Black Creek Drive and Lawrence Avenue.

The Toyota Camry went over the bridge's guardrail at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, after a collision with another vehicle, according to Const. Graham Williamson of the Ontario Provincial Police.

The car fell more than four metres into the creek and landed on its roof.

Three victims were taken to Sunnybrook Hospital with life-threatening injuries, though police said later in the day they are expected to survive. A fourth person, a 55-year-old man from Brampton, was declared dead on the scene. His name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Williamson said both vehicles were northbound on Black Creek Drive at the time of the accident. The occupants of the other vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz, were not injured, he said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by Toronto police and the OPP.

Emergency crews took 30 minutes to extricate the victims and say it was a complicated rescue because the roof of the vehicle was "compromised."

The northbound lanes of Black Creek Drive reopened shortly before 6 p.m.
