Channel 5 has released the first trailer for All Creatures Great and Small season five.

The hit drama is set to return with a new batch of episodes on Thursday, September 19, continuing to bring the stories of James Herriot to life as we rejoin the "colourful ensemble of farmers, animals and townsfolk living in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1940s".

The new season will kick off in spring 1941, where we catch up with Helen (Rachel Shenton) as she adjusts to motherhood following the arrival of baby Jimmy last season.

Although James (Nicholas Ralph) had to return to RAF Abingdon after Jimmy's birth, the trailer reveals that he will come back home as he and Helen embrace in an emotional reunion.

Elsewhere, Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) and Siegfried (Samuel West) are enjoying having baby Jimmy around, and new apprentice Carmody (James Anthony-Rose) has become "part of the furniture".

The offical synopsis continues: "With World War II now fully underway, Siegfried is taking up the slack at the surgery, Mrs Hall and Helen are considering their contribution within the community, and Carmody is eager to step up."

Meanwhile, Callum Woodhouse reprises his role as Siegfried’s mischievous brother Tristan, who has been serving in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.

However, his unexpected return to Darrowby "won't be quite as straightforward as he hoped".

All Creatures Great and Small was renewed for both a fifth and sixth season earlier this year, while the show’s first season was added to Netflix last month.

"We’re so pleased that All Creatures Great and Small will be returning to Channel 5 for two more series," Channel 5’s commissioning editor of drama, Paul Testar, said of the renewal.

"The show has captured the hearts of our audiences and we are committed to bringing even more of James Herriot’s unforgettable stories to our viewers. We can’t wait to share this next chapter."

All Creatures Great and Small will return on Channel 5 and My5 on Thursday, September 19 at 9pm.
