According to a police investigation, the vessel was purchased earlier in the day and the "experienced" operator was observed alone while boarding and leaving Bronte Harbor around 12 p.m. on Thursday.

Search and rescue teams were immediately deployed to the area, with an extensive shoreline search covering Lake Ontario from 16 Mile Creek Area to Bronte Harbour.

Flares were used to illuminate Lake Ontario, as the search continued well into the night.
