Crews search for missing sailor Benoit Bilodeau near 12 Wing Shearwater

Crews searched for missing sailor Benoit Bilodeau near 12 Wing Shearwater Friday evening, prompted by new information, RCMP say.

The leading seaman has been missing since Saturday.

Halifax Ground Search and Rescue and members of the military and RCMP were combing the area near the Salt Marsh Trail Friday evening, RCMP Const. Heidi Stevenson said.

Tony Rodgers, a spokesman for Halifax's search and rescue, said he got a call around 7 p.m. asking volunteers to help search.

The Canadian Forces said Bilodeau, from Fermont, Que., was last seen Saturday walking near a bus stop in front of 12 Wing Shearwater around 4 p.m., carrying a standard military pattern olive-green duffel bag.

Bilodeau's family said he didn't show up for work at the Halifax base on Monday, the day before his 48th birthday.

Bilodeau is described as a white man, standing six foot one inches and weighing 165 pounds. He has short brown hair.

Anyone with information on Bilodeau's whereabouts is asked to call the Military Police Unit in Halifax at 902-722-4446.
