New crime statistics mapped by CBC News show property crime rates have been dropping in Vancouver, particularly in one neighbourhood in East Vancouver.

The data shows the neighbourhood of Hastings-Sunrise had a 73 per cent drop in commercial break-ins from 2007 to 2010 — a trend that appears to coincide with a lot of new arrivals in the neighbourhood.

With several hip new restaurants opening up in recent years, En Route magazine has called the area "One of Canada's next great neighbourhoods."

At the busy Red Wagon diner, owner Brad Miller says he was first drawn to the community two years ago. Miller says they had one break-in then, and no problems since.

"It still feels really like a community in this neighbourhood. That was one of the draws and that's what I think the Red Wagon fulfills as well."

But other shopkeepers say they doubt the dropping crime trend has continued since 2010.

Catherine Yamamoto of Wheelhouse Seafoods says they had so many attempted break-ins that they removed an inside latch on their door.

"I don't think that property crime is down. I would be surprised if it was actually down," she told CBC News.
