Matthew Gray Gubler fans, we may just know why the actor isn't involved with Criminal Minds: Evolution.

When Paramount+ announced the Criminal Minds reboot, viewers were devastated to learn that the longtime CBS actor wouldn't be returning to the procedural drama. While Matthew hasn't personally commented about this decision, he gave his followers food for thought about what he might be up to instead.

On November 22, the Dollface star shared a video on Instagram of what looked to be a piece of paper bustling through the wind of a cardboard city. But before it has the chance to hit the ground, a green hand appears from a makeshift sewer to snatch it for itself. Keeping in theme with the mystery, the clip ends with a message that reads, "Something huggable coming soon ... "

When folks noticed Matthew gave a surprising insight into his next career venture, they immediately began pleading for answers in the Instagram comments section. While the answers were varied, one particular theme stood out.

"Rumple returns?!?!" one person asked, referencing his book Rumple Buttercup: A Story of Bananas, Belonging and Being Yourself. "Omg Rumple??" another follower added. "Duuuuude! Rumple’s back! 🍌💚💛," a different fan exclaimed.

What's more, just one week later he shared more information about what was to come. In an Instagram video shared on November 30, he held a doll of Rumple Buttercup, the titular character in Matthew's children's book and captioned it, "December three." While he didn't give other details, it seems like he's ready to explore more of the kid-friendly monster.

ICYMI: The actor's book quickly scored the top spot on the New York Times bestseller list when it was published back in April 2019. With all of that success (including a special edition of Rumple Buttercup in November 2021), it makes sense that the 500 Days of Summer star would want to focus on writing instead of Criminal Minds.

It falls in line with what Criminal Minds showrunner Erica Messer recently revealed. When asked by Deadline about Matthew's absence in the reboot, she shared that he was juggling a busy schedule.

"He’s been doing other projects and a lot of those were lining up during our window," she told the outlet. "Our window of shooting was just August to December 2. It was the same with Daniel Henney, who was working on The Wheel of Time. So I wasn’t able to get them, but I could get the six other cast members. They’ve never been better."

Who knows, if there is a season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, he'll be free to participate. But in the meantime, we can't wait to hear more exciting details about Rumple's next adventure!
