Cross-country walk for missing, murdered people hits Winnipeg

Norway House walk for MMIW extends to Vancouver

A group is trekking across Canada in honour of the country's missing and murdered people, and they passed through Winnipeg on Monday.

The walkers, who travelled 800 kilometres from Norway House to get to Winnipeg, hope to end their trip in Prince Rupert, B.C. at the so-called Highway of Tears.

Althea Guiboche, better known as Winnipeg's Bannock Lady, walked with the group. She believes Canada is currently in the middle of a crisis due to the amount of unsolved cases of missing and murdered indigenous women.

"It's kind of getting escalated recently and we just need to do something," she said. "The government needs to step up and do something."

The walk is meant to help make Canada safer for future generations, Guiboche said.

"It's always on my mind and I don't want my daughters growing up this way," she said. "I see how it affects my friends. It's just devastating and they need answers, they need action."
