Cupids says 'no' to town taking ownership of Legacy Centre

Residents in Cupids voted Thursday night against the town taking ownership of the multi-million dollar Legacy Centre to become its new town hall.

Mayor Harold Akerman told CBC News of the 57 per cent of residents that voted, 232 voted no, 113 voted yes and there was one spoiled ballot.

Akerman said he is a bit surprised by the result, but said a lot of work went into the no vote — including social media and door-to-door campaigns.

The next step is for the town to decide what to do about a town hall, Akerman said, something which will be dealt with at a council meeting June 2.

The centre was built for the Cupids 400 celebrations back in 2010, which marked the 400th anniversary of the birth of English Canada.

Some Cupids residents say the cost of maintaining the building will be too high. Supporters say it's the perfect answer to the town's quest for a new municipal building.

A public information session in April turned ugly when debate deteriorated into shouting and fighting that almost got physical.

Councillors previously said they would accept the wishes of the majority.
