Dad used a knife and gun to take 5-year-old child from mom in Wichita, officials say
A 30-year-old Wichita man remained jailed Thursday morning on a slew of charges stemming from an incident where he allegedly used a knife and gun to take his 5-year-old son from the boy’s mother, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
“The suspect reportedly assaulted the victim multiple times, cut her hand with a knife, and fired two rounds inside the home while threatening to kill her,” police spokesperson Andrew Ford said. “This incident occurred in the presence of their three children.”
The woman suffered minor injuries.
She was able to flee with two of her children and call 911, Ford said.
Police were called to their south Wichita home just before 5 p.m. Wednesday. The boy was allegedly “forcibly taken from his mother .... (by the suspect) utilizing a knife and firearm during a domestic violence incident,” the KBI said.
AMBER alert issued
The incident led to an AMBER alert around 7:50 p.m. but ended before 8:50 p.m. after the suspect and child were found. An AMBER alert is an emergency broadcast that goes out of cell phones and alerts people to be on the look out for an abducted child.
Shortly after the alert, police spotted the suspect and the vehicle he drove in the 6400 block of East Farmview, near 17th and Woodlawn. He was taken into custody without incident about a half-mile away in the 1300 block of North Woodlawn, Ford said.
The child was not with him. but was found safe with a relative, Ford said, but would not say where.
An arrest is made
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of aggravated endangering of a child, aggravated battery, abuse of a child, criminal discharge of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon by a felon, criminal threat and domestic battery.
Police were first called to the mother and father’s home in the 2000 block of South Grove, the KBI said.
The man was convicted in a 2018 drug case in Sedgwick County, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records. He was released from parole in July 2022, records show.
