Dallas Cowboys continue to check off to-do list with 5-year, $86.8M for RT Terence Steele
Slowly but surely, the Dallas Cowboys are checking off their contract to-do list.
Two big names are still to come in quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver CeeDee Lamb.
But the Cowboys got the biggest man done on Sunday, coming to terms with right tackle Terence Steele on a five-year, $86.8M contract extension that includes $50 million in guaranteed money, per sources.
The Steele deal is the fourth extension for future building blocks since the end of last season. The others were safety Donovan Wilson, safety Malik Hooker and cornerback Trevon Diggs.
That doesn’t include the restructured deal for right guard Zack Martin to end his training camp hold out.rmer undrafted free agent signing from Texas Tech made a pretty good one in 2020.
It is the continuation of quite a journey for Steele, a San Antonio native, who signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech in 2020.
Steele has started 40 of the 45 games he has played in since his rookie season.
And he returns to the starting lineup in 2023 comes after after a remarkable return from a torn ACL he suffered last December.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said he knew Steele would be a 10-year player in the NFL when he showed up as a rookie. He was impressed from Day 1.
And he was even more impressed watching him develop as a anchor on the right side and then recover from the ACL without having to go on the physical unable to perform list and be ready to go at training camp from Day 1.
“He hasn’t missed a day, and it’s just Terence,” McCarthy said. “He’s in there the same time every day, doing the rehab. It feels like he never left. No-nonsense glue guy. Terence is a stud.”
Steele just got paid.
And now the clock begins for new deals for Prescott and Lamb during the season or immediately after.
The contracts of both players expire following the 2024 season.
Prescott has a $59 million cap hit in 2024 and Cowboys would like sign him to an extension to clear room, possibly to fit in a new deal for Lamb.
