Woman dead in Danforth Avenue apartment fire

One woman was found dead after a fire broke out in her apartment building above a Danforth Avenue store overnight.

Firefighters said alarms were working at 2:15 a.m. on Monday when the blaze began in an apartment on Danforth near Greenwood Avenue.

Flames could later be seen shooting from the apartment.

Toronto Fire Services divisional commander Bob O'Hallarn said a passerby alerted firefighters after noticing smoke coming from the building.

O'Hallarn said firefighters found the victim "obviously deceased" inside the apartment's bedroom, where the fire appeared to have broken out.

Nobody else was injured or required rescuing from the building, O'Hallarn said.

'She was a good person'

Janelle Spencer, who lives next door to where the fire happened, was woken by the noise and fire fighting efforts.

" I'm a really light sleeper and I heard trucks outside . When I woke up I saw all the red lights coming from my window," Spencer said.

In talking to CBC News, area residents described the woman who died as a kind person who would often help others.

"She was a good person. She never drank she didn't smoke. She was a nice lady, said Shelley Holmstead.

It's crazy. One minute I'm talking to her and the next day I come and I find out that this fire has happened and, you know, it's unreal," said Holmstead.

It's not immediately clear what caused the fire.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fire.
