Dangerous fire conditions delay start of skatepark construction

·1 min read

While some on Gabriola have been waiting with anticipation for construction of the skatepark at Huxley Community Park to begin, the wait has been extended thanks to the extremely dry conditions on the island.

Site prep for the project, which includes taking down 104 trees, was expected to begin in mid-August, but that can’t begin until after the fire hazard rating issued by the fire department drops to at least ‘high early shift’. The island is currently at a fire hazard rating of ‘extreme’ meaning industrial operations, including logging and land clearing, are suspended.

The Regional District of Nanaimo confirmed that the project has been paused due to the hazard rating.

In the spring, the construction contract for the skatepark was awarded to Radius Contracting. At the time of the contract award, the construction was expected to be complete by the end of this year.
