The Opposition B.C. Liberals have removed MLA John Rustad from the party caucus after he retweeted comments that questioned the role of carbon dioxide in climate change. Party leader Kevin Falcon says in a statement that Rustad, who represents Nechako Lakes in central B.C., has been removed for what he says is a "pattern of behaviour" that isn't supportive of the caucus. Rustad had shared a tweet on Sunday by Patrick Moore, director of the CO2 Coalition, who said the case for carbon dioxide bein
Nova Scotia Power will begin closing one of their coal units at the Lingan generating station in October — eight months after their original deadline of Jan. 1 — as the so-called "Nova Scotia Block" of hydroelectricity from Muskrat Falls comes online. Of the four operational coal units at Cape Breton's Lingan station, one will be placed into cold reserve beginning this fall. Cold reserve means a unit will not be running, but it could be brought back online if required. In an email, NSP said it w

Nova Scotia is expanding a program this fall that allows people in rural areas needing urgent mental health care to skip a visit to a hospital's emergency department and use a virtual assessment instead. "The new virtual option allows the individuals to get timely access in the communities where they live," Nova Scotia Minister for Youth and Mental Health and Addictions Brian Comer said during the announcement at St. Martha's Regional Hospital in Antigonish, N.S., on Thursday. "It helps to reduc
Brain fog, dementia and other neurological conditions are more common two years after getting COVID-19, than after other respiratory infections, a new study in Lancet suggests.
The impacts of COVID-19 must be incorporated into women, peace and security planning in order to improve the lives of women and girls in postwar countries like Nepal and Sri Lanka.

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Estonia’s foreign minister on Thursday defended his country’s decision to bar Russian tourists, saying they are shirking their “moral responsibility” to stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime and its “genocidal war” in Ukraine. The small Baltic country, which shares a 300-kilometer (190-mile) border with Russia, stopped issuing tourist visas to Russians months ago, and as of Thursday no longer accepts those previously issued. “Our idea is to give a signal t
ATLANTA (AP) — Prosecutors investigating whether Donald Trump committed crimes as he sought to overturn his 2020 election defeat in Georgia are running into increasing resistance as they seek to call witnesses to testify before a special grand jury. The latest illustration of that came Wednesday, when lawyers for Republican Gov. Brian Kemp filed a motion to quash a subpoena for his testimony, accusing the office of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, a Democrat, of pursuing his testimon
Some business owners along Huron Church Road say the $10,000 they received in compensation for last winter's Ambassador Bridge blockade doesn't come close to covering the losses they incurred. When barriers went up blocking access to Fred Bouzide's market, it kept customers away right before Valentine's Day, when he was trying to sell thousands of dollars worth of roses. He was compensated $10,000 through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario's West Windsor Small Business

WASHINGTON (AP) — A year after America's tumultuous and deadly withdrawal from Afghanistan, assessments of its impact are divided — and largely along partisan lines. Critics slam the August 2021 evacuation of more than 120,000 American citizens, Afghans and others as poorly planned and badly executed. They say the complete withdrawal of U.S. forces opened the door to a resurgence of al-Qaida and Islamic State militants in the country. And the exit, they say, signaled the United States' lack of c
If you stare at the Salmon River train bridge you might think you're staring at the single biggest "thing" in New Brunswick. The bridge towers over the homes below it, and dwarfs the surrounding forest. When it was built, it was the second-longest train bridge in Canada, a title local people believe still stands. On Oct. 8, 1910, Charles O. Foss, the district engineer in charge of the New Brunswick section of the National Transcontinental Railway predicted this in a newspaper article as the brid

San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. earned an 80-game suspension last week after testing positive for a steroid called Clostebol, and he says he flunked the drug test because of the ointment he used to treat ringworm. As performance-enhancing drug excuses go, it beats Shelby Houlihan's tainted burrito defence. Meat from roided-up hogs doesn't permeate
A shortage of children's liquid pain reliever shortage across the country is affecting pharmacies in New Brunswick too. Kurtis Gallant, a pharmacist at Bowman's Pharmasave in Fredericton, said he was only recently made aware of the shortage of liquid children's Tylenol. He said the supplier is short right now and he's unsure when more of the pain reliever will became available. Gallant said this sometimes happens with other medications. Moncton councillors brushed off staff recommendations and policy against sprawl Tuesday as they voted to allow proposed subdivisions along Elmwood Drive to move ahead. Two back-to-back votes were on plans from separate developers that envision about 1,000 new housing units and a private school near Irishtown Nature Park. Neither vote granted final approval for the projects but offered a sign that councillors may grant approval in the future. Staff recommended denying both plans, saying they viol
Policies were not followed and "errors" were made during the investigation into Coun. Sean Chu's alleged sexual assault on a 16-year-old girl when he was a 34-year-old Calgary police officer, according to a police commission review of how the service handled the allegations. Chu was accused of sexually assaulting the teen in 1997. Criminal charges were not laid but he was disciplined by the Calgary Police Service (CPS) after being found guilty of discreditable conduct.
