Dashcam video shows moment when Alabama fugitive Casey White was captured

Newly released footage shows the moment Casey White was taken into custody in Evansville, Ind., as officers were attempting to administer first aid to Vicky White following a car chase that ended an 11-day manhunt for the escaped convict and the former Alabama corrections officer who authorities say helped him escape.

Officials say Vicky White, 56, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a U.S. Marshals Service vehicle rammed into the car that she and Casey White were traveling in as they fled from a hotel on Monday afternoon.

In a dashcam video released by the Evansville Police Department on Tuesday, Casey White is seen being led away from the crash site in handcuffs. The 6-foot-9 capital murder suspect appears to look back at the Cadillac the pair had been traveling in, which is on its side in a ditch, before being placed on the hood of a police cruiser.

According to police, Casey White referred to Vicky White — who was not related to him — as his “wife” when he was apprehended.

In body camera footage released by the department, first responders are seen pulling Vicky White from the vehicle and rendering first aid. She was then taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy released on Tuesday ruled her death a suicide.

Authorities also released audio of a 911 call made by Vicky White shortly after the crash in which she can be heard telling Casey White to “run.”

Authorities believe that Casey White and Vicky White had developed a romantic relationship that began about two years ago while he was serving a 75-year prison sentence for a 2015 home invasion and carjacking.

He was charged in 2020 with two counts of capital murder after confessing to the 2015 stabbing death of 58-year-old Connie Ridgeway. He later pleaded not guilty.

At a news conference on Tuesday, Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding said officers had been conducting surveillance on an Evansville hotel where the pair had booked a 14-day stay when they spotted the two leaving and a chase ensued.

During the pursuit, a U.S. Marshals vehicle “rammed” into theirs, pushing it into a ditch, Wedding said. Casey White sustained minor injuries in the crash. Four handguns and an AR-15 were found in the vehicle, the sheriff said, as well as $29,000 in cash.

Wedding said Casey White is cooperating with investigators and told them he had been prepared to “engage in a shoot-out.”

Casey White waived his right to an extradition hearing in Indiana and was transferred back to Florence, Ala., where he had his first court appearance since being captured.

At the arraignment, Judge Ben Graves informed White he will be charged with escape in the first degree in addition to the capital murder charges he was already facing.

He was transferred to William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison in Jefferson County, Ala., where he'll remain until his trial.

Vicky White's body was returned to Alabama.
