Dave Smart, head coach of Carleton University men's basketball team, takes leave of absence

Rob Smart will be taking over as head coach of Carleton University's varsity men's basketball team while his uncle, Dave Smart, focuses on helping get Canada's senior men's team to the Olympics.

Carleton announced Dave Smart's leave of absence on Friday, saying that Rob Smart will serve as head coach for the entire 2015-16 season.

Dave Smart, assistant coach of Canada's senior men's national team, helped them to their best-ever Pan Am Games finish by earning a silver medal in Toronto.

The national team is now focusing on the FIBA Americas tournament in Mexico City from Aug. 31 to Sept. 12.

A top-two finish would guarantee the team a spot at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

Correction : An earlier version of this story stated that Rob Smart is Dave Smart's brother. In fact, the Rob Smart taking over as the Ravens head coach is Rob Smart Jr., who is actually Dave Smart's nephew. (Rob Smart Jr. is the son of Dave Smart's brother, Rob Smart Sr.)(Jul 31, 2015 8:09 PM)
