ITV's upcoming crime series Des stars David Tennant as the prolific serial killer Dennis Nilsen, who killed at least 12 men and boys in London throughout the 1970s and 80s.

The series, which will air later this year, sees Tennant looking far more sinister than his usual Broadchurch self as he has undergone a huge transformation to play the role of one of the UK's most notorious killers.

After months without news, we finally have a release date and a trailer for the long-awaited series. Here's everything we know so far...

What is Des going to be about?

Des tells the story of the crimes and subsequent trial of Dennis Nilsen, a serial killer who was responsible for the deaths of at least 12 men and boys (and the attempted murder of seven others) in London during the 1970s and 80s. Nilsen, who was famously nicknamed 'The Muswell Hill Murderer', lured his victims to his home before killing them. Nilsen would then observe a ritual in which he would bathe and dress the bodies, before keeping them in his home for weeks, sometimes months at a time. Nilsen's murders spanned from 1978 until 1983, when a plumber to Nilsen's building discovered human remains in the drainage system.

The series will be split into three episodes, each telling the story from a different perspective; Detective Chief Inspector Peter Jay, biographer Brian Masters and Dennis Nilsen himself.

ITV says of the series, "Des will explore how a man like Nilsen was able to prey on the young and vulnerable in 1980s Britain. The series will not only highlight the police investigation and trial but also the effect of the media coverage on public perceptions of the victims at the time, raising questions of just how far have we really come since then."
