Davis Love III to play at 2019 SMBC Singapore Open
Veteran American golfer Davis Love III, who is one of only three players to have won on the elite PGA Tour in four different decades, will be playing at next year’s SMBC Singapore Open from 17-20 January.
The 54-year-old, who also captained Team America to victory in the 2016 Ryder Cup, will be competing for the first time at the Open, which will be played at the Serapong Course at Sentosa Golf Club.
The 1997 PGA Championship winner is the second Majors winner to confirm his participation. Reigning champion Sergio Garcia, who won the 2017 US Masters, has already announced his return to defend his title.
“I am really excited to have the opportunity to play a tournament in Singapore, where I have not been before,” said Love. “I have heard a lot about the tournament and most of the world’s best players have competed there, so it’s going to be a great way for me to start 2019.”
Love has been a consistent presence in elite golf tournaments ever since he turned professional in 1985. He won his first PGA title in 1987, and was at the peak of his powers in the mid-1990s. Besides winning his lone Major title in the 1997 PGA Championship, he also came in second twice in the US Masters (1995 and 1999) and once in the US Open (1996).
He continued winning titles on the PGA Tour, and when he claimed the 2015 Wyndham Championship in North Carolina at age 51, he became the third oldest winner in Tour history.
The Singapore Open is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation. It will serve as part of The Open Qualifying Series, meaning the leading golfers will qualify for the 2019 British Open at Royal Portrush.
