Agatha Christie adaptation Death on the Nile features comedy duo Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders in a more serious big-budget affair than they're used to.

Joining Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford on today's (October 20) edition of This Morning, French (who plays Mrs Bowers opposite Saunders' Marie van Schuyler) hailed director Sir Kenneth Branagh for his "brave" decision with the casting.

Alongside Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot, Call Me by Your Name's Armie Hammer and four-time Oscar-nominee Annette Bening, she admitted they couldn't be quite as jokey on set.

French shared: "Blimey, it's a huge Hollywood blockbuster directed by Ken Branagh – who I thought was fairly brave actually to cast Jennifer and I together, because if we're together in a great big film, normally we're taking the mick.

"But we didn't with this, because you know... it's a big proper grown-up film with a proper grown-up director that you want to raise your game for – what a fantastic guy."

Following his acting and directing role for 2017's Murder on the Orient Express, Branagh reprises legendary detective Hercule Poirot in this one too.

Elsewhere, Branagh previously revealed that Death on the Nile will be a "lusty" version of Christie's mystery classic.

Death on the Nile is scheduled to hit UK cinemas on December 18.
