Daylight saving time ends soon for Kansans. How much earlier will the sun set each day?

The sun has continued to set earlier every day since autumnal equinox Sept. 23, and the end of daylight saving time, which occurs Sunday, will mean the sun will appear to set even earlier.

For a brief overview, the Uniform Time Act of 1966 made daylight saving time a legal requirement, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

State and federal lawmakers have tried several times to scrap the process, but only two states have succeeded at getting rid of the time change: Hawaii and Arizona. The Navajo Nation portion of Arizona continues to practice daylight saving.

Daylight saving time officially ends at 2 a.m. Nov. 5, changing the usual sunset times back by one hour.

In Wichita, the sun will set at 6:27 p.m. Saturday, while Sunday, the first day after daylight saving time ends, the sun will appear to set an hour earlier, at 5:26 p.m, according to Time and Date, a Norway-based online clock. Daylight saving time will also make the sunrise time appear to happen an hour earlier, with the sun rising at 7:57 a.m. Saturday and 6:58 a.m. Sunday.
