The DGA Awards are always an important precursor for Oscar, so with Sam Mendes taking home the big prize with the Theatrical Feature Award with 1917, it now looks like the Oscar Best Picture race is down to him and Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite. But who knows? However, Mendes is hot off his win at the Golden Globes, so this bodes interesting in the final run-up to the Academy Awards on February 9. And bear in mind that DGA has lined up with Oscar 64 times in 71 years and is a key indicator of the Oscar Best Picture winner.

Also notable was Honey Boy director Alma Har’el’s win in the First-Time Feature category, flying the flag for female feature directors in a year in which they were roundly left out of Oscar nominations and not seen in the Theatrical Feature category at DGA. Har’el used her platform to ask that the DGA support parents as they work. In a year with so few women directors being nominated, this felt like the political point of the evening.
