Deadly taxicab crash investigation hits snag
Police may never know what caused the deadly crash of a taxicab in Winnipeg on Thursday.
Investigators were hoping to review video from a camera mounted inside the the cab but it turns out the video images they've retrieved have offered no assistance.
Efforts to get more images are underway.
A 43-year-old man, Jackson Muminawatum, died when the cab crashed into a tree on Beverley Street near Portage Avenue just before 4 a.m. Thursday.
The 31-year-old cab driver was taken to hospital in critical condition and was last reported to be in critical but stable condition.
Police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said investigators are still confirming details, but there might have been a dispute in the cab at the time.
Muminawatum, who was from Norway House, was known to police and had a 13-page criminal record that included convictions for robbery, weapons offences and numerous breaches of court orders, CBC News has learned.
His father, Jackson Sr, said his son left Norway House to live in Winnipeg but soon ran into trouble.
"I used to tell him not to do that, but he wouldn't listen to me. He didn't listen to me. One time he told me [he] stole liquor from a liquor store," Jackson Sr. said.
Police are looking into whether a robbery may have led to the crash.
There were no weapons found at the scene.
