Debris-caused fatal accident being investigated: David Brazil

Construction tenders delayed this summer, says Heavy Civil Association

The Department of Transportation and Works will investigate how a piece of road debris struck a vehicle's windshield on the Northern Peninsula on Monday, killing 58-year-old Katie Wilcox inside.

Minister David Brazil said few details are known about the fatal incident, but said his department will delve deeper into what happened on Route 430.

"The fact that it was a piece of debris on a highway that went through a windshield and took a life is more than tragic," Brazil told the Corner Brook Morning Show.

"We're going to look at what went on there."

RCMP said the incident happened when two vehicles passed one another while traveling in opposite directions near Reefs Harbour-Shoal Cove on Monday afternoon.

Early reports indicate road debris came through the windshield, hitting Wilcox.

It's not known where the debris came from or what it was.

Wilcox died while en route to hospital in St. John's.

Brazil said the department has been trying to send out advisories, much like those from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and RCMP, when roads are impeded by debris or other obstructions.
