Deer that crashed through windows of Kanata house put down

A deer that was tranquilized after it crashed through windows of an Ottawa home Wednesday and was struck by a vehicle has been put down, the National Capital Commission said Thursday.

NCC conservation officers tranquilized the deer Wednesday and monitored it Wednesday night until 10 p.m., after which they released it into a predator-free zone to see if it could return to the wild safely.

But on Thursday morning, NCC officers checked in again on the deer and found it hadn't moved since the evening.

"Sadly, due to its injuries, NCC conservation officers had to end the deer's suffering this morning," said NCC spokeswoman Jasmine Leduc.

Deer crashed through two windows of home

Ottawa police say the deer made its way through a house on Abbeyhill Drive at about 7:50 a.m. ET Wednesday and then crashed through another window to escape.

It then ran into the street and was hit by a car, Ottawa police said.

Jennifer Dicerni said the deer crashed through her mother's home.

"They just heard this huge crash to say the least," said Dicerni. "It was bouncing around the living room trying to escape and into the dining room and made a mess in there, and fortunately the other window next to the one it had crashed through was open and it jumped out and broke through the screen."

Brett Sullivan said he was at home when the deer jumped over his fence.

"Well obviously it startled me because I didn't know what was happening and you hear this big commotion. You look over and you see a deer standing in your driveway, it's not something you see every day," he said.

The injured deer was then relocated to a nearby park where bylaw officers and police surrounded it while they awaited the arrival of conservation officers from the National Capital Commission.
