Deinsberg St-Hilaire granted bail on charge related to fatal hit and run

Deinsberg St-Hilaire, man charged in Andy Nevin hit-and-run, allowed to drive

A 39-year-old Ottawa man has been granted bail after he was charged with failing to remain at the scene of a fatal hit-and-run crash.

Deinsberg St-Hilaire was charged last week with failing to stop his vehicle or identify himself after a June 28 crash that killed 39-year-old cyclist Andy Nevin.

On Monday, St-Hilaire appeared in court for a bail hearing and was granted his release on a $10,000 bond. He must surrender his driver's licence and passport and live with his mother as part of his bail conditions, the judge said.

Nevin, a 39-year-old father of two, was cycling from his family's new home when he was struck after dawn near the intersection of Leitrim and Albion roads.

Ottawa police had pleaded for the owner of a 2004-2006 white Ford F-250 or F-350 pickup truck to come forward.

Investigators believed that type of truck was involved in the fatal crash and they later seized a white truck belonging to St-Hilaire with evidence of damage.

Forensic officers then investigated whether it matched evidence collected at the scene of the crash. St-Hilaire was also under police surveillance prior to his arrest, police sources have said.

St-Hilaire's lawyer Trevor Brown said the accused has several children. He returns to court on July 23.
