A plan to keep electricity rates from skyrocketing once the Muskrat Falls project is fully online will be finalized before the end of this year, but still beyond the original deadline of Sept. 30. An official with the Department of Industry, Energy and Technology confirmed to CBC News on Tuesday afternoon that a deal is just weeks away, and that an earlier statement issued by the department was incorrect. On Monday, in response to an inquiry from the CBC, the department issued a statement saying
Premier Andrew Furey said Monday he still has confidence in Health Minister John Haggie, even as Furey called aspects of the province's health-care system "a crisis," a phrase which the health minister has so far avoided using. While he didn't say the health-care system as a whole is in crisis, Furey did say the problems many face in health care do constitute a crisis. "It's a crisis for those experiencing the system when it doesn't work for them, it's a crisis because of the pandemic, in fact,

P.E.I. is lowering the age for people to get vaccinated for COVID-19 at pharmacies, in an effort to get more young people vaccinated. Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Heather Morrison made the announcement at a briefing on the pandemic Tuesday. "Our rates of full vaccination are among the highest in the country, and we will continue to stress the importance of immunization in the younger age groups," said Morrison. "Right now, our rates in the under-40 age groups are too low, especially the 20- t
The federal government's propositions to support oil and gas workers as Canada moves away from fossil fuel production fail to address some of the big challenges of that industrial shift, according to the Canada West Foundation. The independent, non-partisan think tank says there are two key pillars missing from Ottawa's "Just Transition" strategy. It also says the categories outlined are "insufficient and do not capture all the critical elements that must inform a just transition." The federal g
Britain said on Wednesday it had secured deals for two COVID-19 antivirals, one developed by Merck and the other by Pfizer, which it said could be used to treat patients by the end of the year if regulatory approval is granted. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has removed almost all COVID-19 restrictions and is relying on COVID-19 vaccines and treatments to try and withstand winter pressures on hospitals given high case numbers of more than 40,000 new infections a day. "We may soon have a new defence in our arsenal with two new antiviral drugs that we have secured," health minister Sajid Javid said in a statement.
(Reuters) -Netflix Inc's global sensation "Squid Game" helped lure more new customers than expected, the world's largest streaming service said on Tuesday as it predicted a packed lineup would further boost signups through the end of the year. After a sharp slowdown in the first half of 2021, Netflix added 4.38 million subscribers from July through September to reach 213.6 million worldwide. Netflix enjoyed a subscriber boom last year as COVID-19 kept audiences at home, but growth stalled early this year.

DETROIT (AP) — As an American leader, Colin Powell’s credentials were impeccable: He was national security adviser, chairman of the Joint Chiefs and secretary of state. But his legacy as the first Black person in those roles is murkier, with some African Americans saying that his voice on their behalf could have been louder. Powell, who died Monday of COVID-19 complications, spent 35 years in the Army and rose to political prominence under Republican presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush an
They were animals, many of them say. Prey that had lost all sense of time. Targets no longer human to either their hunters or themselves. For more than two weeks, survivors from the Bataclan concert hall in Paris have testified in a specially designed courtroom about the Islamic State group’s attacks on Nov. 13, 2015 — the deadliest in modern France. The testimony marks the first time many survivors are describing —and learning — what exactly happened that night at the Bataclan, filling in the p

The struggle between the health authority and the business has escalated since then and will now go to a B.C. Supreme Court judge who will hear Fraser Health's injunction application in Vancouver Wednesday morning. According to Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.'s provincia

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — When Republican lawmakers in Tennessee blocked a policy to ease up on low-level marijuana cases, Nashville's top prosecutor decided on a workaround: He just didn't charge anyone with the crime. Meanwhile, in Georgia, the Gwinnett County solicitor vowed not to punish anyone for the crime of distributing food or water to voters in line. Tampa’s chief prosecutor says a law that allows law enforcement to detain protesters until their court date is “an assault on our democracy
The gargantuan stone broke a record that had been set only last year in the same state.
Record-sized hailstones fell across Australia's east coast this week, with ice pellets larger than grapefruits lashing residents in parts of Queensland, the country's metereology bureau said on Wednesday. A thunderstorm struck the Yalboroo area north of Mackay, 954 km (593 miles) north of Brisbane on Monday, bringing record-sized hailstones measuring 16 cm (6.3 inches) in diameter, the Bureau of Metereology (BOM) said. Video obtained by Reuters also showed vehicles and buildings at an industrial site in the Gold Coast being pelted by hail on Monday, with a man picking up one hailstone the size of a golf ball and showing it to the camera.
