Department of Homeland Security extends Real ID deadline to 2025

Yahoo Finance Live's Seana Smith reports on the DHS decision to postpone Real ID requirements for travel due to state driver's licensing backlogs.

SEANA SMITH: The deadline to exchange your regular driver's license or identification card for a REAL ID has now been pushed back from 2023 to 2025. The delay will give states more time for their residents to comply. Now the Department of Homeland Security saying, quote, "REAL ID progress over the past two years has been significantly hindered by state driver's licensing agencies having to work through the backlogs created by the pandemic."

The Department plans to, quote, "use this time to implement innovations to make the process more efficient and accessible." The REAL ID Act passed Congress back in 2005. The program stems from a 9/11 Commission recommendation establishing minimum security standards for ID cards.
