Depp Faces 10 Years In Jail Over Dogs: Report

Johnny Depp could face 10 years in prison for illegally taking his two dogs into Australia, government officials have reportedly warned.

The Hollywood actor hit the headlines after he and his wife Amber Heard flew into the country this month with his Yorkshire terriers , Pistol and Boo.

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that a Senate committee hearing was told Depp could be sentenced to up to a decade behind bars, or a maximum fine of AU$340,000 (£172,000).

The newspaper said Agriculture Department officials made the revelation to members of the committee in Canberra.

"The dog thing - we'll get that out of the way quickly," one member reportedly said.

"It is very serious."

According to the paper, officials investigating the matter believe Depp, his fellow passengers and the flight crew on the couple's private jet all failed to declare the presence of the dogs.

Some members of the committee reportedly lamented the attention attracted by the case, saying the pets had become "film stars on Facebook".

Senator Richard Colbeck said: "A celebrity brought their dogs in to be pampered. The dogs were duly pampered and that pampering was put onto social media."

Depp had been given two days to take his pets out of Australia or they would be put down.
