Designated driver service keeping Winnipeggers and their cars safe

When Winnipeggers sip back too many beverages, they now have a new way home — which includes bringing their car.

Drivers 'R' Us Designated Driving Services was started almost two weeks ago by husband and wife duo Shea and Tamarah Todd.

"We are trying to be a part of the community to be sure that everyone's friends and families are always safe at an affordable price," Shea Todd said.

People call for a ride. However, when the two-person team shows up, one of the drivers takes the person and their car home, while the other driver follows behind, picking up their counterpart once the person, and their car, are safely home.

Shea said it means people don't have to worry about leaving their vehicle and it getting ticketed, towed or vandalized. He added they hope it will help deter people who may consider drinking and driving.

The couple got the idea while they were living in Surrey, B.C., last year and Tamarah worked for a similar service. When they moved to Winnipeg, Shea's hometown, they decided there was room in the market here.

"We researched everyone around the city here and there's not too many that do it … and they don't offer the services that we are offering," Shea said.

Those services are picking people up or dropping them off outside of the perimeter highway as well as targeting things like dentist appointments, where someone might not feel comfortable driving after.

The service started out at a higher cost but has since lowered following customer feedback, Shea added. While they have yet to settle on a permanent cost structure, currently it's a flat fee with adjustable kilometre pricing. Shea said they provide estimates to customers when they call.

Another difference from a taxi service is that the designated driving service doesn't need a special licence because they are not transporting anyone in their own vehicles, Shea said.

The Taxi Cab Board was unavailable for comment.

For now, the service relies on the couple, with a few call-in drivers. It has been a slow start, Shea said but he hopes the holiday season will bring steady growth. They already have some people booking rides for holiday parties.
