A cat which was detained at a prison in Sri Lanka after allegedly trying to smuggle in drugs and SIM cards has reportedly escaped.

The feline was detained at Welikada Prison last week with two grams of heroin, two SIM cards and a memory chip hidden in a plastic bag tied to its collar.

It escaped on Sunday when prison guards came to feed it in the room where it was being kept, the Aruna newspaper reported.

The newspaper said an investigation has been launched to find out which inmate the cat was delivering heroin to.

The prison has reported an increase in incidents of people throwing packages of drugs, phone chargers and mobile phones over the walls in recent weeks.

In other news, health authorities in the country announced that the coronavirus outbreak is now under control, except for two clusters.

Sri Lankan authorities have decided to reopen schools on August 10, nearly five months after they were shut.

The Education Ministry said all public and Government-approved private schools will resume with social distancing measures.
