Diamondback Energy's(NASDAQ:FANG) Share Price Is Down 65% Over The Past Year.

This week we saw the Diamondback Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:FANG) share price climb by 14%. But that isn't much consolation to those who have suffered through the declines of the last year. During that time the share price has sank like a stone, descending 65%. The share price recovery is not so impressive when you consider the fall. You could argue that the sell-off was too severe.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last year Diamondback Energy saw its earnings per share drop below zero. While this may prove temporary, we'd consider it a negative, so it doesn't surprise us that the stock price is down. We hope for shareholders' sake that the company becomes profitable again soon.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. A Different Perspective

Investors in Diamondback Energy had a tough year, with a total loss of 64% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 15%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 8.0% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
