Diamondbacks clobber Giants for second straight day
The Arizona Diamondbacks put up double-figure runs for a second consecutive game Saturday, pummeling the host San Francisco Giants 10-4 in a matchup of National League West clubs.
With an 18-2 romp of the Giants on Friday night, the Diamondbacks recorded 10 or more runs in back-to-back games for the first time since September 2017.
Ketel Marte hit the second pitch of the game for a triple and led off the third inning with a solo home run, his 11th of the season, highlighting a 13-hit attack one day after the Diamondbacks belted out 21 hits.
Right-hander Taylor Clarke (1-1), promoted from Triple-A Reno before the game, benefited from the offensive onslaught to record his first major league win in just his second big-league start.
Arizona scored twice in the first inning against Giants left-hander Andrew Suarez (0-2) and never trailed.
After Marte's triple triggered the two-run first, his homer sparked a three-run third, an inning that included an RBI double by Eduardo Escobar and sacrifice fly by Adam Jones.
Up 6-1, Arizona busted the game open in a four-run fifth. Jones, Kevin Cron and Tim Locastro doubled in the uprising.
Suarez was pulled three batters into the fifth, charged with nine runs (seven earned) and nine hits in four-plus innings. He walked three and struck out two.
Locastro had two doubles and scored twice for the Diamondbacks, who had been held to a total of five runs in a three-game sweep at San Diego to begin their 10-game trip.
Jones also had a pair of hits, while Ildemaro Vargas scored twice and drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks.
Clarke went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and six hits. He walked three and struck out four.
The Giants rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to make the score a bit more respectable. Pablo Sandoval delivered two of the runs with a single.
The inning also featured Mike Yastrzemski scoring his first major league run after getting hit by a pitch. The grandson of former Boston Red Sox standout Carl Yastrzemski, called up from Triple-A Sacramento earlier in the day, went 0-for-3 in the game with two strikeouts.
Steven Duggar and Kevin Pillar had a double and a single apiece for the Giants, who were outhit 13-9.
